Nooooooooooo!

Just in - the people over at excite news have word that the epitome of realised utopian visions: the NAKAGIN CAPSULE TOWER was marked for deconstruction today. Among the reasons, and of great importance, is the use of asbestos within the capsules structural framing.

Yet the commencing date for this atrocious act has not been released.

Having just delivered an essay on the connection of utopian ideas on society and technlogy at the example of the Metabolists, the feelings of loss are deep.

Surely with the capsules being designed to 'hot-swap' [as it were] you would have thought that new capsules, that comply with todays building standards, would be a feasable alternative to complete demolition!@$£%^*

after some research...

May 30, 2006
Recent situation about Nakagin Capsule Tower Request for the Preservation of the Nakagin Capsule Tower are submitted by the Japan Federation of Architects & Building Engineers Associations, the Japan Institute of Architects, Docomomo Japan.

Meetings were held discussing the towers future where the most favourable outcome was to have the capsules replaced by new, upgraded versions. The capsules were originally designed for replacement after 25 years...its been more than 30 years to date, and having read that page [see link above] it looks like the situation is not good as the commitee have decided to completely pull the plug on this one.

Kisho Kurokawa is a legend amoungst the visionaries that were the Metabolists. Even today he seeks to realise the future in our present day. In a message concerning the tragic fate of his most iconic building, it is noted how further interest in architecture within todays society could be evoked, and how 'the perpetual nature of architecture' would be sustained, if we lived in a place where people 'awaited the unveiling of the latest upgrade'.

an exerpt from Kisho Kurokawa's letter:

'...the new capsule design proposed by myself and Taisei Construction have exactly the same design as the current units, but have a thickness of 6mm of FT steel plate with Rib, and an expected lifetime of 60 years. Selecting this option of replacement will enable work to be completed in 12 months, is less expensive per unit than demolishing and rebuilding, immediately solves the problem of asbestos, and will allow the owners to move into their new capsules more than two years earlier than the option of reconstruction. In addition, I am confident that the value of the new capsules will definitely increase, and that this will enable the value as a cultural asset to be preserved, which will be higher than an ordinary condominium.'.

Absolute Legend!

i envisinge neoprene joints - allowing light to penetrate between the edges of every panel - thus creating an interior where the walls/ceiling seem to float/[suspended].

the wave test - testing for strength of movement in the depths...

results equal SAFE - the test equipment was recovered and from the data collected i can say that there were sufficiently low movement levels [it didnt move at all - found it exactly below the point on the jetty that it was released from.]
